Ugh… I blogged too soon. Bad weather, even on a 130,000 ton ship… is just bad. Rachel woke up feeling a little “out of it” but not too bad… the waves however were NOTICEABLY larger and the breakfast area MUCH emptier. Interestingly enough, DH pauses in the middle of breakfast, raises up his head rather alertly (think prairie dog – LOL) looks around as if something is terribly wrong and says, “We’re turning around.” Okay… we were obviously turning, but I didn’t know about all the way around. “Yep, we’re turning around” “Okay, so?” “Well, we’re going in the wrong direction…” This sentence would be randomly repeated until lunch – LOL!
Nobody seemed as hungry as the day before, but the three younger ones all wanted to go back to Camp Carnival. DS1 was less enthused, so he and DH decided to “go for a walk” that happened to lead them to the Game Room (not the Casino). Funny how their feet work, right? I wandered around and couldn’t FIND the gameroom and opted to go down for their “Line Dancing” class. You’ve never lived until you’ve done line dancing in a crowded room with the ship tossing… and rolling.., and listing more than is really fun.
I was a few minutes early and as I approached a seat in the Atrium a gentleman in his 50’s looks at me and says rather good naturedly, “Where are all those kids uh yours?” I laughed (I’ve never seen this man before in my life and yet he remembers me even WITHOUT the kids – not always a good thing). I told him and he said, “Is the little one still green?” (Remember she’d been face painted like an alien… and gone to dinner that way two nights before)… and I said, “No, they’re probably coming up with something all new today – LOL.”
The line dancing started with many a giggle at who was going to fall over b/c of their feet, and who was going to fall over to listing and gravity – LOL! 30 min later and we were actually glad it was over and it was nearly time to go pick up the other kids. We opted for lunch in the dining room and still nobody was all that hungry. We allowed the kids to order a couple of Sprites to share to help with the queasiness… they actually felt like eating something… I opted for ordering just chocolate and strawberry ice cream… nobody ate too much.
Then it happened again. We were standing near Atrium and began to roll a little more than we had been. My FIL commeted to DH "did you notice that we're only rolling to starboard?" DH says "Yep... we're turning across the wind/waves. They should have warned the staff. Could get interesting." I don't know how they do it, but I guess 24 years in the Navy for FIL (and two for DH) mean you can sense these things). The ship took three more rolls and the last two were big enough to send glassware and bottles of alcohol crashing all around the lobby and shops. Shortly after this, an announcement came over the sound system telling us we would NOT be docking in Barcelona, Spain and would have a “free day” in a different part of the Mediterranean and then stop off in Monoco for our regular time slot. DH commented when we changed direction and at least he felt better that we were now headed in the RIGHT direction… b/c going east when you should be going west apparently is a bit disconcerting – LOL!
When it came time to leave the dining room I looked around and couldn’t find my room key. MIL was dropping off the older 3 at Camp Carnival, so Doodlebug & I went down to the Customer Service desk to cancel it and find me a new one. It wouldn’t be all that critical (I could get into my room, but these cards can be used to purchase things all over the ship, so it needed to be taken care of asap). Waiting in what was now a long line… with rolling waves and nowhere to go my ears and my stomach were beginning to disagree more than usual… and I began to get that really sinking feeling that has nothing to do with excess water on board a ship. I collected Doodlebug, prayed that I would be able to at least cancel my “Sign & Sail” card by phone and we hurried to the elevators noting the “bags” tacked noticeably next to the elevator buttons.
Short story, I didn’t make it. Unable to get into my own room I knocked on the IL’s stateroom and lost my cookies at the restroom door. Sigh. Not my finest moment. I’ve made it through worse weather without a peep… but this time… I peeped – ugh. Time to lie down… until supper.
About an hour prior to supper the ship sailed into the lee of Sardinia… and all I can say is “God Bless the lee of Sardinia”. Wind was still making it to the ship (somewhat) but the waves were NOT hitting us nearly as hard and the rest of the evening passed peacefully with us enjoying a nice dinner and planning for a better day at sea than the one we’d just had. On a positive note, only Boo-Boo (and DH/FIL of course) never felt “off” and the other 3 seemed to take to heart that while sailing can be a lot of fun, bad weather is something to take seriously. I’d hate for them to get to the end of something like this and NOT think that bad things can happen.
